Impact of Telecoms 57 Years After


Despite the huge challenges in the telecoms sector since independence in 1960, stakeholders are of the view that the industry has impacted on the Nigerian economy in several ways, writes Emma Okonji

Although the Nigerian economy is still grappling to catch-up with the rest of the world in the area of technology development that is currently driving global economies, the Nigerian telecoms industry is one industry that has greatly impacted on the Nigerian economy.
The sector has contributed to the economy positively through job creation, infrastructural development and contributing over $70 billion to gross domestic product (GDP) since the inception of Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) in 2001.
The sector has equally changed the personal and business lifestyles of Nigerians in a most suitable way, through voice and data communications.



New Cars Increasingly Crammed With Distracting Technology



WASHINGTON (AP) — The infotainment technology that automakers are cramming into the dashboard of new vehicles is making drivers take their eyes off the road and hands off the wheel for dangerously long periods of time, an AAA study says.

The study released Thursday is the latest by University of Utah professor David Strayer, who has been examining the impact of infotainment systems on safety for AAA's Foundation for Traffic Safety since 2013. Past studies also identified problems, but Strayer said the "explosion of technology" has made things worse.



With Ballistic Missile Radar, U.S. Opens First Permanent Military Base in Israel



The first permanent U.S. military base in Israel was dedicated on Monday.
A few dozen American soldiers will live and work on the base, situated inside the school of the Aerial Defense Division of the Israel Air Force, in the Negev. High-ranking U.S. officers attended the dedication ceremony.

DARPA has developed a new sensor that can see through clouds, operating just as effectively as current systems do in clear weather.
The Extremely High Frequency (EHF) targeting sensor successfully demonstrated its ability to capture real-time video through clouds, marking the completion of its flight tests.
Ultimately, the Pentagon is hoping to create a system that can be mounted on different types of aircraft to capture high-resolution video of targets on the ground, regardless of the weather conditions.
